Doing hair
since 1981.
My family were cosmetologists. I enrolled in beauty school while I waited to join the Air Force, because I wanted to be a pilot. I never thought I would fall in love with this industry as much as I have.
In 1988 Manuel and I opened Julian August Salon in Redlands, California. Ten years later my team needed education, so I learned how to teach. I've been fascinated by how people learn ever since.
Care and connection come first in my classes. My favorite part is watching stylists grow and seeing how proud they are of their work.
My path
- 1981Licensed as a cosmetologist.
- 1988Opened Julian August Salon in Redlands, California, with my husband, Manuel.
- 1998Started teaching, beginning with my own salon team.
- 2008Launched Hair Color Magic, my course on formulation and color placement.
- 2018Named North America Artistic Director, Hair Color, for Aveda.
- 2020Co-founded Color Space with Ray Civello.
- TodayLeading CS Ed., the education team at Color Space.
Community
Hairbrained
I was one of the first members of the Hairbrained community, and later a Hairbrained host. I taught Hair Color Magic to about 300 stylists at the Hairbrained Teach-In after NAHA.
